Diet and Stress – The Relationship
Have you ever know about Ayurveda? It is the traditional Indian medical science. Ayurveda states that the food that we eat has a critical role to play in the manner in which the mind and body functions. Specific foodstuffs cause more stress while others relax the body and spirit. Since stress is considered more of apsychological issue, not many are aware that diet can play a significant role in stress management. Certain kinds of foods magnify the physical symptoms of stress while others alleviate physical manifestations of stress.
Therefore, it is plain that specific foodstuffs must be avoided during stress and some that should be consumed more than others.
One of them is sugar. Sugar is nothing but empty calories and is processed straight after its ingested, giving an immediate boost to the adrenal glands. Thus you’re feeling good after having sweets. should realize is this taxes the adrenal glands as theyare already over-worked. Its like putting them on steroids. Also, being empty in calories, our body has to use enzymes, vitamins and minerals from its saving account to process the sugar. Over atime period, a diet rich in sugar, drains the body off vitamins and minerals and makes it feeble and more subject to stress.
Another food that causes the adrenalin glands to work diligently is caffeine. Caffeine is present in coffee, tea and colas and given the high quantities of these drinks that we consume, stress levels are obviously higher in this generation as compared to the earlier ones.
Highly packaged foods like bleached flour ( present in bread to a massive extent ) have nothing except empty calories and are void of nutrient elements. These refined foods donot have fiber too. This causes bowel problems and body cannot expel wastes and toxins efficiently.
In addition, to add to the pure irony of the situation, these ready-made foods are first stripped of the vitamins and nutrients and then later artificially fortified to draw in buyers who are looking for better and healthy products. It is much more beneficial to have natural and whole foods so as to retain the natural nutrient elements that are a part of nature’s design.
Whole foods like unprocessed wheat, oats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables are what you need to include as a part of your diet. Make sure that these vegetables and fruit arenot processed and canned ones but fresh and raw. Fruit and vegetables contain a fair amount of fiber and therefore help in easy elimination of poisons and waste products. They also take more time to digest, and thus release energy slowly and gradually, compared to short bursts in energy related to convenience food. As a result you don’t feel hungry in between meals and your energy level in consistent throughout.
A high nutritive diet is what the body wants to battle stress. We are what we eat. By changing our perspective to nutritive our body than satisfying our tastereceptors, we can go a long way is building a healthy and stress-free body.
