Visit a Real Arizona Ghost Town on Your Arizona Vacation
Jerome, Arizona will help to make your Arizona vacation a little different then you had anticipated. Here you will visit the largest Ghost Town in America and be able to walk the streets and enter the buildings that made this town what it was. In the late 1800’s the community was a thriving copper mining community with over 15,000 people. Today there are 450 people that make the town home and welcome you to see their ghost town.
Today the community is pretty mild compared to the history of the miners, prostitutes, saloons and more. It was known as the “wickedest town in the west.” Following the fires that destroyed a large portion of the town in 1894 and 1899 the town finally incorporated. Today they offer some of the most beautiful mountain views you could ask for. The community is home to emerging artists, craft people, musicians, writers and more. Being listed on the National Register of Historic sights has also been accomplished by the citizens that remain in the town.
The town has had its adventures since the late 1800’s such as the mountain claiming some of the buildings by having them slide down the side. The jail is one of the buildings that is now sitting below the community, not usable, but a great picture to be taken. The buildings that comprise the town now are many of those that were there in the early days and have been refurbished. The stories are still there, the history is there and the adventure of walking in the paths of those that came before will make for a great Arizona vacation.
